Texture And Apparel

Pictures shown: 1 and 2 depict outfit from Carnival in the Spanish Canary Islands and Venice, Italy, respectably. 3 and 4 show looks from fashion weeks in Milan and London. 5 shows a couple dressed up as they finish skiing the 29th Annual Valentine's Day Mountaintop Matrimony ceremony in Georgetown. In 6, a member of a demining team searches for explosives in a Colombian jungle. In 7, a priest in Indonesia makes a speech during the Pasola War Festival to welcome a new harvest season.

A significant number of the handpicked photographs from various news sites this week included a focus on clothing and the textures of those garments. It may come as obvious, what with clothing-related events happening all over the world--Carnival and Milan and London Fashion weeks--but several other pictures with garments as the main focus appeared in the photo collections as well. As such, I think that clothing definitely has become a trend this week, and I can see why. Past photo trends recently have been blacks, browns, and grays; to me, this week's bright colors and exaggerated outfits seem to be a reaction to that.

Photographers seem to use garments as the focus of these pictures to draw in viewers' eyes and pose a stark contrast to the other, darker pictures that have come out of more serious world events. Through relatively simple photos with extraordinary outfits, photographers can convey a complex story and invoke curiosity.
