Biden is meeting today with several other countries for a international climate change summit, in the first step plan of the Biden administration to heal the tensions started by the Trump administration in pulling out of the Paris accords. The United States, which took a step backwards when it came to climate change work and environmental protections during the four-year Trump administration, has suffered from a negative image in much of Europe thanks to withdrawing from various climate change accords.
Aside from putting forward a climate protection plan and new commitments for the environment, in the summit the Biden administration has pledged to cut emissions up to 52 percent by 2030. The United States hopes to pressure other countries to make similar pledges, writes the Washington Post, but risks appearing as a failure if other countries do not comply. Officials reportedly claim that re-building the trust and rapport that was lost with other countries during the Trump administration will be absolutely essential.
