North Carolina Senators voted on and approved a bill that would force schools to reopen, reported The Washington Post. Public schools will have to open with some type of in person learning for at least one group of students, though students whose families opted for Virtual Academy will be allowed to remain virtual. The bill, largely supported by Republicans (though with some Democrat crossover) made its way quickly through the Senate. NC Governor Roy Cooper has said he does not support the bill, as he "favors local control for deciding on school reopening."
In other COVID-19 related news, Cooper has finally signed a relief bill for North Carolina citizens, which will improve vaccine distribution, help people pay their rent if affected by COVID-19, and distribute money for reopening schools. The bill will provide some parents with $335 checks to be used for childcare costs or remote learning, writes CBS 17.
The newly-signed law's effects have already started to be seen. At 300 stores in North Carolina, Walgreens will now be offering appointments for eligible groups to receive their COVID-19 vaccine, reported WXII (Winston Salem) News.
