The News and Observer, Fox8, WRAL, and NBC17 have reported on a new development of interest in the crime and justice world of North Carolina that has quickly begun to draw attention, especially following Oregon's historic decriminalization of drug possession.
A North Carolina task force recently recommended that the state decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, up to 1.5 ounces. Attorney General Josh Stein, co-chair of the task force, supports the declaration, saying that although Black and White people use marijuana at similar rates, Black people are far more likely to be arrested, charged, or fined than their White peers.
The task force also recommends a future study to analyze the pros and cons of eventually legalizing marijuana for possession, cultivation, and sale, in addition to analyzing the possible health effects on North Carolinians following a possible legalization.
