Following the end of the Republican National Convention last week, The News & Observer, WRAL, and CBS17 report that Trump will visit Wilmington on Wednesday and speak in the afternoon on the site of the historic Battleship North Carolina. He is scheduled to speak outside the battleship, which is from WW II, at around 2 PM, and press has stated that he will designate the city of Wilmington as the United States's first WW II Heritage City in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the war's end.
Wilmington played a vital role in the war for the United States, producing hundreds of battle ships like the one above and even having three prisoner of war camps in the nearby area. The city will be named WW II Heritage City as part of legislation passed last year that requires one city to be named a heritage city each year by the secretary of the interior.
Vice President Mike Pence will also visit North Carolina, heading to Raleigh, the state's capital, just two days after Trump's scheduled speech in Wilmington. The visits come amidst the two parties' battle for key battleground state North Carolina, which historically has been very close to swinging either Democrat or Republican in elections. In the 2016 presidential elections, Trump won the state with just 49 percent of the popular vote, while Clinton won just 46 percent of the vote.
