In the lingering aftermath of a traumatic Trump presidency, the Senate has voted to acquit Donald Trump of goading an insurrection. The move came in high-stakes vote, requiring two-thirds Senate approval to convict. 50 Democrats (a few of which are independents that caucus with Democrats) voted to convict, with 6 Republicans crossing over to convict as well. However that was not enough to reach the necessary two-thirds, and Trump was acquitted.
Mitch McConnell, the leading career Republican in the senate, voted to acquit, reported The Washington Post, but only because he believed the Senate did not have power to impeach a president who had already left office. His statement was a scathing attack on the former president Trump. He said that Trump's actions were "practically and morally responsible for provoking" the Capitol attacks.
Trump lashed out at McConnell via a statement issued through an affiliated Super PAC, as he still does not have the right to post on most social media sites. Though no longer president, Trump appears to be planning to support only Trump-supporting politicians for election and reelection come midterms, according to The Hill, and he plans to "make life miserable" for McConnell.
